Franz Ferdinand Turn Down Offer Of MTV Cribs
Jan 2 2008 By John Dingwall
FRANZ Ferdinand have revealed they turned down the chance to open their Scottish homes to the reality MTV show Cribs.
The Scots rockers were invited to take part in the long-running show which sees the world's most famous celebrities give the music channel and viewers a guided tour of their luxurious mansions.
But the million-selling band say their humble flats in Glasgow's east end would prove too much of a culture shock for viewers used to seeing the palatial homes of American hip hop and rock stars.
Drummer Paul Thomson admits Franz Ferdinand have been inundated with TV offers since their debut album shot them to fame back in 2004.
Paul said: "We get offered adverts all the time but if it's not appropriate we turn it down. We've recently been asked to do Cribs, but we didn't go for it.
"We've seen Americans display their show homes and when they open the door you can tell they don't know where they are going because they don't live there. It's all for show.
"Plus it seemed a bit silly to be offered to open our doors to MTV. I'm not sure it would be appropriate for the cameras to pop round to my wee flat or our bassist Bob's place in Dennistoun or Alex's place on Alexandra Parade. I much prefer the idea of an MTV2
Cribs which would be an indie version. Then they could go visit a friend of mine who lives in a caravan outside the back of the flat he's been evicted from.
"It's a programme I love but I never thought I would be asked to participate in it. It's bizarre.
"The guys on that show are living in a different world to Franz Ferdinand."
Franz Ferdinand - frontman Alex Kapranos, Paul, guitarist Nick McCarthy and bassist Bob Hardy - are due to get stuck into the recording of their third album later this month. And Alex says it will be far more enjoyable than 2005's You Could Have It So Much Better because it was written while the band relaxed at home in Scotland.
Alex, 35, explained: "The most pressure on aband is with their second album. That's a really tough one, mainly because they are touring so much and we had been touring a hell of a lot after that first record.
"The sheer exhaustion of being on the road so long was something we had to overcome.
"We've deliberately taken a little bit of time off the road, recharged ourselves, refreshed our ideas, regenerated our enthusiasm so that when we go to record again, it's going to have that joy which music really should have.
"For us, 2007 was an adventure because we set out and didn't know where we were going.
We went to places we never thought we'd explore before."
He added: "It was really important for us to get back to where we once belonged.
"Glasgow is the home of this band. When we got the band together we'd go and hang out in each other's flats to write songs together and that's something we've been getting back to in the past year.
"It's been a fun and enjoyable way to spend the last year. It's the most exciting thing in our lives.
"Going around the rest of the world? Aye, it's all right.
"Over this last year, we've not been seeing as much of the world but I am glad because it's when we are home that we see things more clearly in terms of this band.
"I have cities I love all over the planet. I love New York. I love Berlin and love going to Rio De Janiero but when I am riding in the cab back to Alexandra Parade, I just feel at home. I can't explain why. It's bizarre.
"Living in the east end of Glasgow, before the band got known, we'd get stared at at the bus stop because people would be wondering who the freaky guys were. Now, it's 'is that the guy from that band?'"
FRANZ Ferdinand have become known for championing up-and-coming Scots acts such as Sons And Daughters and 1990s, and say Scotland's music scene is both thriving and inspiring them.
"We are intense music lovers ourselves," said Alex. "We like going to a gig and enjoying aband. If we see a band we like in Scotland, we want other people to know and if we can we take them on the road with us.
"When we were up in Ullapool, Nick and I had great sessions with folk musicians until six in the morning. There is a great young folk scene in Scotland with people doing new things and plenty of new rock bands too."
Paul, who has a young son Georgie with wife Esther, added: "The music coming out of Scotland is pretty healthy just now as it always has been."
Displaying a collection of tattoos which include matching swallows on his forearms and "Love" and "Paul" on his knuckles, the drummer added: "I don't have an ounce of hate in my body so I couldn't possibly have love and hate on my knuckles.
"I got my knuckles done in January last year and haven't had any more tattoos since. You need some time to recover, three or four days because it is quite painful. I got the swallows on my arms a while back which were the most painful.
"They were my first tattoos and it does become addictive. I have one with my wife's name on my neck too."
Alex added: "I think Paul's tattoos are really beautiful. Paul's tattoos reflect his love for his wife and it is really nice to have a physical representation of that."
Meanwhile, Alex insists Franz Ferdinand are planning a change of direction with the third album, which is likely to remain untitled until the 11th hour.
"We're just finishing off the writing of the new album," said Alex. "We've recorded a couple of songs and will record the rest of it this month by the looks of it.
"The last record was more of a rock record and this one is going be more of a dance record. I don't mean dance as in techno, I mean a record that you can have as a party record.
"You've always got to come up with new ideas when you are in a band. Even after the second album we went through a phase where there were different sounds. Some of the songs like L Wells and the re-recording of Eleanor Put Your Boots On had a folky flavour.
"The way we think about it, a band like us can't just write an album any more. We have to write a collection of singles. We'd like to have an amazing collection of 10 songs that we could have as singles in their own right and if you don't have 10, there's no point in recording an album.
"We're approaching the album with a clear theme in our head. This is going to be a record that reflects what we were into at the time."
Despite their plan for an album of potential hits, Alex admits the band didn't expect their single Take Me Out to become their signature tune.
He said: "There are a few contenders to be hits but when you write a record you are surprised by the ones that become big.
When we did the first album we were surprised that Take Me Out became such a big song for us. We always thought it was going to be Tell Her Tonight of Auf Achse. You don't really know until other people start listening to them."
