Alex Kapranos is a singer and a guitarist. Before Franz Ferdinand, he spent over a decade jumping between stints as a chef,wine-waiter,kitchen porter, delivery driver, welder, promoter, doley layabout and college lecturer - none of which he was particularly good at. He also played with several bands - none of which were particularly good.
Andrew Knowles, the illustrator, is a touring drummer and keyboards player with the band, and a graduate of the Glasgow School of Art.Read, red, red? Tell us everything what you know about this franzastic book.

It's a fabulous book and so funny. I've read it a few times and it still feels 'fresh'. I've got 2 copies of the first edition - one that I won through dot co dot uk (which I couldn't believe as I never win anything) than they got Alex to sign for me and then the 2nd one I got signed by Alex and Andy at the London Signing/Q&A/Reading he did in November 2006. As a result of the book, we decided amongst a few of us that we would try and get to the places Alex talks about in the book for a laugh. It's been really good fun tbh. So far I've been to: Maison Bertaux's (the cake shop) - London Mother India's - Glasgow Sorriso - Zagreb Dickson's Pork Shop - South Shields (Saveloy Dip is DIVINE and I want more!! lol) De Oude Muntkelder - Utrecht (didn't have the pancake that Alex did but it was really nice) Looking to do more as/when I can. Next time I go to Glasgow I'd like to try and get to the Buttery. Though a visit to Mother India's again wouldn't go amiss either lol

so i've been in:
Munich Christmas Market Sorriso, Zagreb Bräuhaus Sunner im Walfisch, Cologne
but i'm planning to visit the addresses in London next summer, hope i could go out and work there.
and yeah, this book is funny. i red the first chapter many times..poor Alex but how he wrote about that accident. it was so funny. and Andy's illustrations are beautiful. perfect for this book.

I went to Sorriso when I was in Zagreb to watch England play Croatia last September, and I went the day before the match, and there was no one else in the restaurant! The waiters kept giving me funny looks but it was worth it Maison Bertaux's is ameezing and as Alex says, it's somewhere to take a person you really care about and treat them. Mother India's was the scene of a rather unfortunate incident with a napkin, curry sauce and my eye but the food there is out of this world and I like the atmosphere.

Sound Bites is such a fun read and I was briefly inspired to have a go at food writing myself xD I have the copy with Alex on the front. Has anyone actually been to the cafes and restaurants he mentions in the book?

Kapranos kakes! lol! Love it! One of my favorite chapters (of course, since I live in Minneapolis) is the one on Nye's Polonaise Room. Alex does a perfect job of describing the place. I only wish he would have talked more about the Ruth Adams polka band (World's Most Dangerous Polka Band)...she's this woman in her 80s (or 90s probably by now), and she has very few teeth if any left. She plays the accordion and the couple of old guys in the band with her actually look like they might top her in age. The band plays in a little hallway of a bar next to the main dining area at Nye's. Everyone - from 90-year-old guys to the college crowd - is either doing the polka or smiling in booths with a drink in hand, watching people do the polka. Next time the guys are in town, they should go there again and check it out! And if any of you ever are in town, go! Better yet, I'll buy the first round!
