Can we get an actual album already?
Franz Ferdinand guitarist Nick McCarthy is set to score an unusual puppet show.
With Franz Ferdinand on down time, Nick McCarthy has decided to use his time widely. The guitarist recently unveiled a new album with side project Box Codax, and has now outlined plans for a fresh project.
In an usual twist, Nick McCarthy is set to score a puppet show. 'The Isle Is Full Of Noises' is inspired by Shakespeare's classic play 'The Tempest' and uses specially crafted puppets and newly designed lighting effects.
Taking place in Milton's Music Hall between September 6th - 9th, the production is steered by Berlin-based actor and puppeteer Philipp Pleßmann. Working with set designer Hank Schmidt and director Kalma Streun, the music has been co-written by Nick McCarthy.
The Franz Ferdinand guitarist co-operated with Philipp Pleßmann on the score, which apparently moves between ‘70s film musicals such as Jesus Christ Superstar, Hair and Grease, Simon and Garfunkel and The Flight of the Concords.
In a statement Nick McCarthy revealed that the bulk of the songwriting was done in Glasgow. "We wrote the songs together in Glasgow and the words to the songs (Shakespeare) fit our music like a glove. We couldn't believe it. Let's get this thing to London immediately,” said the guitarist.
“We've written an album worth of songs for this and you'll be able to get that at a computer near you soon,” he added.
“We think it's a beautiful album. We didn't get dragged through Shakespeare at school so we don't mind him. We don't like the globe and all that fake traditional bullshit. We are allergic to a mid summer nights dream. We're not proud of him but we think there's a possibility of getting some rock and roll out of him. And that is of the essence. We like the Muppets but don't like the Fraggles.”
